Father’s Day Reflections: Lessons from My Dad
As Father’s Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the invaluable lessons my father imparted to me. His wisdom and guidance have shaped not only my life but also the lives of my children. Here are some of the key skills and memories that stand out:
Tool Mastery: Empowering Women. I sat on the edge of many a board while my dad cut them. My father never hesitated to teach me how to use tools. Whether it was fixing a leaky faucet or assembling furniture, he believed that practical skills were essential for everyone, regardless of gender.I remember he and I taking on a leaky tub into our kitchen when Nathan was very little. The kid just slept through all the noise. As a woman, I’ve carried this confidence into adulthood, tackling DIY projects with gusto. Dad’s insistence that I learn to wield a hammer or use a power drill has empowered me in unexpected ways, and scared Jerry all at once. ;)
Budgeting Basics: Financial Literacy Dad was a firm believer in financial responsibility. Where he may have slipped, he made sure I was prepared.
The Art of Cooking: My poor father married into a very large loud Italian family. Luckily, he spoke the language of great food. Cooking wasn’t just about sustenance; it was an expression of love. I remember shopping on the way home, so we had fresh food for dinner, or a fresh loaf of Italian bread. The kiddos here the word "grandpa's cooking ..." and they show up.
Skills for Life: Passing It On - When my sons came along, Dad eagerly stepped into the role of teacher. He showed them how to ride a bike, cook a steak or how to sneak off to a Muppet movie. I watched as my boys absorbed these skills, their eyes wide with wonder. (In fact his Fathers Day Present is a trip to Jim Henson's Home Town)
Our Bonus Kids: Love Knows No Boundaries Our family expanded when we welcomed bonus kids—stepchildren—into our lives. Dad’s love was never limited by bloodlines. He treated them as his own, sharing stories, laughter, and life lessons. His example taught me that family extends beyond genetics. It’s about the bonds we create and the love we give unconditionally.
He taught today at his church and we managed to sneak good seats:
